Male superheroes have become pop culture icons in the past decade. You only have to glance at fitness sites to see how many workouts are dedicated to building the ultimate male hero body. With the release of the upcoming Wonder Woman film we thought we would turn the tables and examine how Gal Gadot got into Wonder Woman shape.
Gadot’s first turn as Wonder Woman came in last year’s Batman vs. Superman where she went side-by-side with Batman and Superman played by Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill respectively. The one time Miss Israel in 2004 had to put on some serious muscle without looking like a bodybuilder to play the role and look ready to kick ass.
Speaking to Vogue the actress said that her mum was a huge inspiration as she was a gymnastics teacher. This exposed Gadot to many different types of sports. She used this early experience of mixing up different sports and incorporated it into her Wonder Woman training regime.
She told Vogue: “I try to workout at least three times a week, at least one hour each time, and I do different things, like TRX or Pilates. If I’m staying in a cold country or there happens to be no gym, I’ll exercise in my room. If I’m by the ocean, I swim or I’ll paddleboard, which I love because it keeps you in shape and it’s meditative.”
The important lesson to learn from this interview is that mixing exercises is a great way to stay in shape. Not only does it challenge the body to adapt, it challenges the mind and helps ensure that boredom through routine doesn’t ruin your motivation. Gal Gadot showed off her cardio routine with a picture on her Instagram account, which shows her climbing a wall. These exercises are excellent as a strength and cardio workout as they are much more interesting than the usual treadmill and weights routine. You will also feel and look like a Wonder Woman too.
Wonder Woman has had a long and difficult road compared to her male counterparts on her journey to the big screen. While Batman and Superman have enjoyed numerous films and television shows, producers have struggled to bring Wonder Woman to the screen. Even Joss Whedon, director of the Avengers films, couldn’t figure a way to bring her to the screen.
The latest attempt before Gal Gadot put on the boots was an origin series called Amazon. Wonder Woman’s Amazon origins are an important part of her character and have inspired countless spin offs using the warrior princess’ iconography. These range from Xena Warrior Princess to the digital slot version Amazon Queen from online entertainment specialists Spin Genie. Such is the popularity of the character that companies have tried to build entire fictional universes around their own ‘Wonder Woman’. However, Amazon didn’t take off and it was left to Gadot to bring Wonder Woman to the big screen.
Hopefully this has inspired you to become your own Wonder Woman. Gadot clearly enjoys her workout and that is the key. If you don’t enjoy it you won’t keep it up, so mix up your exercise and build some super strength.
